HistoryThe city of Vejer is situated in the middle of one of the oldest cultural landscapes in Spain. It owes its early origin to its strong strategic position above the river Barbate and proximity to the sea. This location provided the town with good defenses and easy access to the sea by river. Vejer most probably already existed during the rule of the Carthaginians (roughly 400 BC.). The name of the city originates from that time. It is likely that the Carthaginians called the river Barbate "Wadi-Baka" - after the city of Baka which dominated its delta. During the course of time the word "Baka" gradually seems to have been transformed into the name "Vejer".

Eating Out There is a magnificent range of restaurants ranging from budget to higher priced. Two of those that we have enjoyed are:
"La Castilleria" (in the neighboring village of Santa Lucia) - our favourite! Outdoors open from May to September - the best steaks ever with homemade puds (a rarity in much of Spain) and a great wine list. Medium priced.
"La Califa "moorish style restaurant located in an old XII century house, and is part of the "Casa del Califa" hotel.Make reservations in advance, the place is small and quite popular! Here you can enjoy North African food, tajines, couscous... The baklava desserts are delicious!!
